Ragland baseball coach Rodney Lipscomb knows if his Purple Devils team has any shot of winning a state title, all roads lead through Sweet Water and Athens Bible. That’s why he invited the two Class 1A powers to Ragland this past Saturday just to see where his Ragland team stood.
Ragland wins St. Clair Tourney The Ragland Purple Devils won the St. Clair County Baseball Tournament Saturday beating the host Springville Tigers 4-1 in the title game.
Leeds comes up short at regional The Leeds Green Wave’s defense of the AHSAA 3A championship came to an end Saturday in a 56-40 loss to Piedmont in the Northeast Regional finals in Jacksonville.
DAR beats Ashville to end season There was no comeback by the Lady Bulldogs in the AHSAA Class 4A Northeast Regional last week at Pete Mathews Coliseum at Jacksonville State University. The DAR Lady Patriots took an early lead and held on to it for a 71-52 victory.
Lady Bulldogs to face DAR After a slow start, the Ashville Lady Bulldogs did what they had to in the fourth quarter and pulled out a very hard-fought 53-44 win over the Saks Lady Wildcats last week in sub-regional action.
Ragland blasts Holy Family Coach Rush Rutledge’s girls were ready for Holy Family and took charge from the beginning. They were up 18-8 after the first quarter and 37-19 at halftime.

Ragland, Ashville headed to regionals The Ashville girls and the Ragland girls are headed to the Northeast Regional Basketball Tournament on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
Ragland girls win area The Ragland Lady Purple Devils won the Class 1A, Area 11 Tournament title Saturday beating Jacksonville Christian 62-51 in the championship game.
St. Clair Saints beat Bulldogs In the Class 4A, Area 10 Area Tournament last week, the Saints defeated Ashville to advance to meet Oneonta for the area crown. They defeated the Bulldogs 60-47.
Season ends for Springville girls The season came to a close for Coach Warren House and his Springville Lady Tiger basketball team. They lost to Erwin 53-33 last week in the opening round of the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament that was played at Erwin. Springville matched Erwin point for point in the second and fourth quarters 9-9 and 11-11. It was the first and third quarters where Springville had problems. The Lady Tigers trailed 19-10 after the first quarter and after a 9-9 score in the second quarter, the halftime score was 28-19. Springville really struggled offensively in the third period as they were outscored 14-3 to make the score 42-22. Both teams scored 11 points each in the fourth quarter to make the final score 53-33. Molly Lindsey scored 10 points to lead Springville. Audrey House netted 5 points while Anna Marie Ronderos, Dixie Rhodes and Danyelle Martin scored 4 points each. Rhodes also led the team in rebounds with 7. Kate Riker totaled 3 points while Geri Wilson had 2 points. “We had a hard time matching Erwin’s scoring in the first and third quarters,” said House. “We needed to do a better job on the defensive boards because Erwin scored several points off of put backs from missed shots.” Springville finishes the season with a record of 10-19.
Signing Day 2010 Moody’s Chad Slade and Springville’s Jeremy Richardson both signed football scholarships with Auburn University Wednesday on National Signing Day. Slade was signed as an offensive tackle while Richardson was signed as a wide receiver. For more on each signing, check out next week’s sports section of the St. Clair Times.
