Leeds High School’s football team polished off a diamond-studded season by winning the state 3A championship last week. To claim the title, the Green Wave beat Hamilton 42-32 at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium, but the boys from Leeds had won 14 consecutive games to reach that point.

For the season, Leeds scored 547 points, including the 42 in the championship game, and allowed only 102, 32 of which came from the Hamilton powerhouse.

Defeating Hamilton was no mean feat. Both teams came into the game with perfect records, and Leeds head coach Keith Etheredge said that although his team had dominated through its defense all season, the offense won the game against Hamilton.

The team has 17 seniors, who as a group have amassed the greatest number of wins in the school’s history — 49 wins in four years and two state championships.

Congratulations to the team and to coach Etheredge. You’ve had a good ride to the top, and you’ve earned your laurels.
