A 22-year-old Ragland man has been arrested for providing alcohol to a student on school premises, which is a felony.
Ragland Police Chief James “Bubba” Brown arrested Jarod Scott on Dec. 26, at his residence of 371 5th Ave. Scott was taken to the St. Clair County Jail in Ashville.
Brown said Scott gave alcohol to Justin Castleberry, who was driving a vehicle and crashed on Providence Road Oct. 22. Castleberry was 17 at the time, and the wreck killed one of the passengers in the vehicle, Ragland student Kristan Cox, 16.
“In the past, this charge has been a misdemeanor, but now it is a felony,” Brown said. “I continued to search a little deeper in the Alabama Code, and under Title 16-1-10, I found something on the books we were not aware of.”
The section states if a person provides any alcohol to a student under the age of 18, it is a felony.
“Per this law, we went with that charge,” Brown said. “I hope this will wake some of these people up, and help them see the seriousness of this.”
Castleberry was arrested Dec. 10, and charged with reckless murder.
