JACKSONVILLE — With the game against Collinsville on the line, senior Jimmy Brock put the game on his shoulders — and led the Ragland Purple Devils to victory.
Brock scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and four additional points in overtime to help lift the Purple Devils over Collinsville 54-49 in the opening round of the Northeast Regional, played at Pete Mathews Coliseum on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
They will play Skyline Friday at 2:15 p.m. for the chance to move on to the AHSAA Final Four.
Ragland 54, Collinsville 49
It was a game played between two top-10 teams — Collinsville entered ranked No. 3 with a 27-3 record, and the Purple Devils came in ranked No. 6 with a 25-6 record.
It lived up to its billing.
Ragland enjoyed an 8-2 lead with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter, but the Panthers ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 12-8 lead.
Collinsville doubled up Ragland in the second quarter 14-7 to take a 26-15 halftime lead.
The Purple Devils fought back in the third quarter, cutting into the Collinsville lead with a 7-0 run that made it 28-24. With 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter, it was 32-31 after a basket by Jacob Brewster. With just one second remaining, Collinsville’s David Hernandez threw up an awkward shot and the three-pointer went in to make it 35-31 headed into the fourth quarter.
After scoring 16 points in the third quarter, Ragland added 16 more in the fourth quarter. They held Collinsville to 12 points and forced overtime as the score was knotted at 47-47.
Brock scored four of his team’s seven points in overtime and held Collinsville to two points to win the game.
Brock scored 15 points while teammate KiJana Lindsay also netted 15 points. Lindsay also grabbed 11 rebounds. Close behind was Cody Jones with 13 points. Combined, the three players were 14-of-38 from the field shooting, and 13-of-22 from the free throw line.
Devane Brewster chipped in five points while Jacob Brewster added four points. Dakota Gardner finished the game with two points.
Ragland coach Andy Eden said it was just a very good high school basketball game.
“We did not shoot the ball well at all in the first half,” Eden said. “We hung in there in the second half.
“We didn’t quit, and didn’t give up. We made the plays down the stretch. We are pleased to still be playing.”
Ragland 75, Valley Head 57
The Purple Devils advanced to JSU with a 75-57 victory over Valley Head in sub-regional action.
The key to the victory was the fast start by Ragland as they jumped out to a 15-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.
Lindsay opened the game with a trey, and he closed the opening quarter with a trey to make it 26-9 after the first quarter.
By halftime, the Purple Devils were up 47-21.
Eden played a lot of guys in the second half, and Valley Head won the scoring battle 36-28. The final score was 75-57.
“We played a lot of people in the fourth quarter,” Eden said. “We wanted to get the win and move forward.”
Three Ragland players scored in double figures, and Lindsay led the way with 23 points. Brock netted 15 points while Jones added 11 points. Jacob Brewster and Gardner scored six points each while Jaylyn Brewster chipped in five points. Sawyer Merritt scored four points while Levi Campbell totaled three points. Trez Carson had two points.
