The Ragland Purple Devils improved to 10-3 on the season with a 60-53 come-from-behind win over Sacred Heart last week at home.

It was the second time this season that the Purple Devils defeated the Cardinals. Both games went down to the wire.

Sacred Heart took a 4-0 lead early in the game, as Ragland did not score until there was 3:47 remaining in the first quarter on a layup by KiJana Lindsay. By the time the first quarter ended, Sacred Heart was still on top 12-8.

Halfway through the second quarter, Ragland was down by a score of 20-11, and still trailed 28-18 at halftime.

The Purple Devils turned the tide in the third quarter. Devane Brewster hit the first two shots of the third quarter to make it 25-22. Cody Jones’s layup with 2:31 remaining in the quarter pulled Ragland to within two at 31-29.

Less than a minute later, Devane Brewster’s shot tied the game at 31-31. With 53 seconds left, another layup by Jones gave Ragland its first lead of the game at 33-31. Ragland outscored Sacred Heart 15-6 in the third quarter to take the 33-31 lead.

The Cardinals opened the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 42-35 lead, but Ragland fought back to stay close, and then pulled it out in the end.

One key to victory was hitting free throws down the stretch.

Jimmy Brock, who led Ragland with 28 points, hit nine free throws in the fourth quarter alone. Lindsay also nailed four free throws and finished the game with nine points.

Devane Brewster scored nine points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Jones finished the game with eight points while Jacob Brewster, Trez Carson, and Sawyer Merritt all scored two points each.

Ragland coach Andy Eden said he was extremely pleased with the way his guys handled being down early, held their composure, and then fought back to win the game.

“Sacred Heart is a very talented basketball team,” Eden said.
