Although they were not happy about it, local school officials were not surprised when Gov. Robert Bentley announced a 3 percent proration of the education budget for the rest of this fiscal year.

The St. Clair County School System had already set aside enough money to cover the proration, but Superintendent Jenny Seals said she had hoped to be able to apply that money to the 2012 budget.

Chief Financial Officer Laura Nance said the proration would amount to about $1.4 million for St. Clair schools.

It’s a bad news-good news sort of story. As bad as it is to have to use the reserve funds, at least St. Clair kids won’t have fewer resources and fewer teachers for the rest of the term. It speaks well of the management and planning going on in the St. Clair County School System.
