The annual Leeds/Moody Relay for Life event to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research is set for Friday at Bill Morris Stadium, on the campus at Moody High School.

“Everything has been going great so far,” said Laura White, publicity chairman for Leeds/Moody Relay for Life. “We have several new teams that have helped to reinvigorate the event, give it some new blood.”

The event begins with the “Survivor’s Dinner,” at around 5:30 p.m. in the MHS cafeteria. Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m., with the Survivor’s Walk at 7:15. the luminaria ceremony begins at 9:30 p.m.

The goal for this year’s relay remains $53,000, a high goal in spite of the early date for the event. White said roughly 23 teams are working to raise funds.

Among them, she said Moody First Baptist has already raised more than $2,000, while a team called Deny Cancer Credit has more than $5,000 to its credit.

April is “Paint the Town Purple” month in Moody, a campaign to bring even more attention and awareness to the event. A number of different fundraisers have also been going on in the community, including an antique car show.

White added that Friday’s event will take place, regardless of the weather.

“We hope it doesn’t rain,” she said. “We’ll be out there rain or shine.”
