“There’s probably a couple of hundreds of items,” said Councilman Greg Gossett, who will switch hats from councilman to auctioneer this Saturday morning.
Gossett will stand inside or outside the 19th Street Armory this Saturday, depending on the weather, and asked for the highest bidder before he says, “It’s sold!”
“Rain or shine, we are going to conduct this auction,” Mayor Bill Hereford told the council at Thursday night’s council meeting.
The council approved a long list of surplus items for the auction.
“We may make some money, but the big thing – we’re going to clean up,” Hereford said.
Gossett said there are no minimums for any auction items, except for one 1988 Ford bucket truck.
The actual auction will start at 8 a.m.
Hereford said the items that are not sold, will go to the scrap yard.
“We aren’t going to put anything back where we found it,” he said.
Some of the surplus items include old trucks, vehicles and police cars.
There are plenty of computer towers and printers available as well.
Other items include miscellaneous items like combat boots, dishwashers, file cabinets, bed mattresses, and even a couple of - pianos? That’s right – pianos – at least that’s what is on the surplus list.
There are also a couple of mowers, a scanner that can’t pick up the Pell City Police Department frequencies anymore, and a few desks and chairs for those bargain shoppers.
Gossett said buyers can arrive as early as 6:30 a.m., Saturday, to look over all the items the city has for sale before the actual auction begins.
In other matters Thursday night, the council:
• Approved to accept the streets in Hillstone Subdivision.
• Approved to adjust the water bills for 70 water customers, who have received discolored water. A total of 78 customers have had their water bills adjusted by the city.
• Approved a special events retail liquor license for Bayou Steamer Crawfish Boil.
• Accepted the low bid in the amount of $94,700 from Bay Fire Products for 19 SCBA units for the fire department.
• Approved an agreement with Jefferson State Community College, so the police department could receive Click it or Ticket grant money.
