Tip of the hat

07-16-2008

Retired Jefferson County District Judge R.O. Hughes, who now makes his full-time home in St. Clair County, has been appointed drug court judge for the county.

And we think officials made a wise decision.

Hughes is a veteran attorney and judge, and he readily recognizes the important role such courts can play in this state in reducing jail and prison rosters and keeping court dockets manageable.

He replaces retired Circuit Judge Bill Hereford, who is running for mayor of Pell City, and he will serve the court with honor. Hughes has a proven track record, and he will now put that experience to work for the judicial system in St. Clair County.

We congratulate him on his appointment, and we commend Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb, who named him to the post, and Circuit Judge Charles Robinson, who recommended him.

The choice was a good one, and Hughes should serve the system well.
