Tip of the hat

06-26-2008

Those who are pushing for preservation of the old rock school in Springville deserve thanks and support.

The historic structure made of chert rock is perhaps the largest structure of its kind left in Alabama, and it has been placed on the list of “Places in Peril: Alabama’s Most Endangered Sites in 2008,” which may bolster its chances of being saved.

The building once served as the high school in Springville and has had other public uses over the years. But it has fallen into disrepair, and education officials who own it and city officials who could become the owner aren’t sure about its future.

We think it needs to be saved and restored. A suggestion that it serve as a public library is certainly one worth considering, and there may even be other ways it could serve the city’s future while preserving its past.

We encourage officials to come together and map out a plan for the building’s fate. A building that once stood as the heart of the community should not become a victim of inadequate funding or attention.
