With all the issues facing Alabama these days — a downturn in the economy, budgets slashed, health care costs soaring, the need for improvements in education and all the rest — it seems ludicrous that one Republican senator can only raise the need for a specialized license plate.State Sen. Hank Erwin of Montevallo said he will introduce legislation to create an “I Believe” license plate to enable Alabama drivers to proclaim their Christian faith.
While the emphasis on faith is laudable, the notion that it needs a car tag to validate it is laughable.
But the pandering in the Alabama Legislature continues. It is yet another chance for lawmakers to vote ‘yes’ on Christianity, which has absolutely nothing to do with the laws Alabama voters sent them to Montgomery to enact.
This state faces far too many problems to spend precious time on creating a license plate that underscores faith. That ought to be a given, and it ought to be an issue for Sundays, not legislative sessions.
It is time lawmakers concentrated on the real problems in this state. Proclaiming faith on a car bumper isn’t one of them.
