Two officers have recently been recognized for their work with the Argo Police Department by being awarded “Officer of the Month” plaques and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds. For May, Capt. Glenn Wells received the award for stepping into a position of authority while Police Chief Wilbur Lee was out sick with pneumonia for a large portion of the month.
“It is hard to find someone who can step up and you can trust them to do their duty without wavering,” Lee said. “There were no problems while Glenn ran the department and everything ran smooth. He interacted with the mayor and Council, no problem.
“It is a relief to know that he can step up when I have to be off, for anything from being out sick, an injury or going out of town. I not only wanted to thank him publicly, but also on a personal note for his work during the month of May.”
Lee said he and Wells have known each other for about 20 years and he is pleased to know there is someone in the department he can count on when a personal emergency arises.
Lee also said he would not have to wring his hands worrying about the department if he ever had to be away for an extended time as long as he knew Wells would step up to take charge while he was gone.
For the month of June, Officer Vann Ware received the award for his work in a case concerning counterfeit money.
Lee said Ware received a call about a vehicle, saying “something” had been found in it.
When Ware arrived to investigate, he found a printer in the car.
“He lifted that printer up and counterfeit money started falling out of it,” Lee said. “He searched the trunk and there were more bags of the fake money in there. It only amounted to about $300, though, and no counterfeit plates were found.
“Vann has worked with the Secret Service on the case and they have determined the car came out of Gate City. We know who the car is registered to and I expect an arrest will be made shortly.”
Lee said the person most likely had a high-quality laser jet printer and had been copying an actual bill to make the money.
He said Ware received the “Officer of the Month” award for June because of the large amount of time and effort he had given to solving the case, and it appears that work is about to pay off.
