A former resident of Springville has joined with a local business to raise funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust effort.Jamie Jones Zinober, formerly of Springville, is hosting a fundraiser at Local Color on July 26 to raise money for the Tampa bay Breast Cancer 3-Day. She is joining thousands of others in a three-day, 60-mile walk benefiting the search for a cure.
Participants in the walk must each commit to raising a minimum of $2,200.
“Many walkers raise more than the minimum. In fact, event organizers report the average amount raised in $2,900,” Zinober said. “With this fundraiser, I hope to exceed my fundraising goal. I know with Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust as beneficiaries, I’m helping to ensure funding is available for important research and community outreach programs.”
Zinober is bringing her fundraising campaign to Springville’s hot spot, Local Color, where visitors and fun seekers can Karaoke for the Cure beginning at 8:30 p.m. July 26.
Karaoke for the Cure is your usual karaoke with a twist. The audience will make donations to either keep the performer on stage singing, or get them off. There will be a $5 cover charge with $2 going toward the benefit.
Local Color will also offer a late night menu for $8. You will receive either appetizer or dessert and coffee. Beer and wine specials will also be available.
“We are so glad to help raise awareness for the importance of testing for breast cancer. We also are proud to raise money in memory of Judy Cox and in honor of my friend Bettye Wallace,” said Merl Dollar of Local Color. “We are delighted to offer our space to Jamie and her quest for the cure.”
The Breast Cancer 3-Day takes place in 14 cities nationwide with 85 percent of net proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the remaining 15 percent goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
Zinober is walking in memory of Maida Wagner, her husband’s maternal grandmother; also Judy Cox, a former high school teacher and mentor at Springville High School. She also walks in honor of Elizabeth Crowe, her great-aunt and Ashville resident; in memory of Alice Price and in honor of Judy Gann, Susan Carter and Susie Hunt.
The Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day begins Friday morning, Oct. 31 and ends with the closing ceremony Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2. Walkers will cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace.
Each walker is supported by coaches and online assistance that aid in all aspects of training and fundraising, while clinics, meetings, and training walks provide ongoing support.
“As a Breast Cancer 3-Day participant, I have an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, honor those who lost their lives to the disease, and ultimately, have an enormous impact on awareness and funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs,” Zinober said. “The event is challenging and fun and the memory of my personal accomplishment will last a lifetime. I walk so that my children may never have to know any victims of breast cancer.”
