Teens in poodle skirts and leather jackets doing the “Hand Jive” and the mashed potato are centerpieces for Odenville Middle School’s production of the original high school musical “Grease” set to come to the stage April 24-25.“The students have been working really hard on this production,” said drama teacher and director Tammy Williams. “They been begging me to let them do it for five years now, and this year, it’s going to be great.”
Williams said to be able to pull off a production like “Grease” there has to be potential and certain skills among cast members.
“You have to have the right cast to be able to do this musical,” she said. “This year, we have it. And we’ve had a number of boys try out for parts and that works out great. It’s usually primarily girls who audition for musicals.”
The “Grease” cast is made up of sixth through eighth grade students and will be the first production in the newly renovated auditorium at the middle school.
“This is the first show in the renovated auditorium,” Williams said. “We’re very excited about that.”
The cast for this year’s production includes Pink Ladies Shea Taylor, LeeAnne Dycus, Kailey Dowling, Mary Pulliam and Mattie Winfree matched up against the T-birds who are Jon Dollar, Will Armstrong, Logan Moon and Dalton Taylor.
Other cast members are Jennifer Peoples, Elizabeth Westerfield, J.D. Short, Noel Park, Matt Lambert, Darrien Hess, Monica Blount, Morgan Waldrup, Brent Campbell, and Skyler Park.
Jacob Smith takes the leading role as Danny and Summer Johnson reprises the roll of Sandy.
The production takes the stage April 24-25 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be pre-ordered from the school by calling 629-2280, ext. 1.
Proceeds from the play go toward the purchase of a new stage curtain, and sound and light equipment.
